Enzymatic Polymerization as a Green Approach to Synthesizing Bio-Based Polyesters

Given the fossil fuel crisis and steady consumption of finite resources, use green polymers is becoming necessary. However, term “green” describes materials that present properties (such as biological origin and/or biodegradability) are produced via sustainable processes conducted under mild conditions not requiring chemical catalysts, toxic solvents or reagents. Truly must combine these characteristics; consequently, enzymatically synthesized bio-based biodegradable can be characterized truly green. The review focuses on most promising, commercially available aliphatic alipharomatic polyesters enzymatically. In particular, recent developments in enzymatic polymerization PLA PBS furan-based (e.g., PBF) herein analyzed. Based this analysis, it concluded important steps have been taken toward synthesizing sustainably polymers. Still, necessary to evaluate applied methods regarding their capability used an industrial scale.
